You might check with dell, but I think you have to actually plug the monitor into one of the USB ports on the computer (in addition to plugging the monitor into the video card) in order to use the ones on the side of the monitor. Kind of like a USB hub. If you already have it hooked up, maybe try shutting everything down, reseat the cable on both ends, and fire it back up. If it still won't work - try a different USB port on the computer - or test the ports on the computer by plugging your devices directly into it.
